Listening for stories in the wild basin
of the Sonoran Desert

Picture
The writings I offer on this site emerge from my journey of homecoming to the Sonoran Desert. After being away from these homelands for 27 years, I'm back.  Just as I was packing my bags to return, I noticed a surprising, playful story bubble up into my consciousness.

"But I don't write fiction," I told the story.

"Who said this is fiction?" I felt the story chuckle with the fullness of attitude and presence.

All I could do was laugh and write.  That first story is now entitled: "When People Confuse Guadalupe for Mother Mary."

Several other stories have arisen with characters whose voices I never expected to hear.  When I start trying to weave and plan their plots, they disappear into thin air.  I am learning how to approach them with respect.  To let them move me--like a stirring in my feet, a quickening in my bones.  I delight in them as I would treasured, unexpected guests.  I savor the moments when I can offer them coffee, a meal, and my undivided attention.  I pray not to get in their way.

I share these stories with you as simple offerings.  I am here for their mysteries of timing and synchronicity.  Of one thing I am certain:  they have much to say.
May these stories honor the spirits of these lands.
May these stories stir your own longings and joys.
